この曲は1954年に作曲家・作词家のバート・ハワード（Bart Howard、1915年7月1日 - 2004年2月21日）によって作られたもので、初演はニューヨークのキャバレー "Blue Angel" において、ヴォーカルのフェリシア・サンダーズ (Felicia Sanders) によるものであった。ただしこの时の曲のタイトルは『In Other Words』（「言い换えると」の意味）であり、曲调も3拍子で、现在多く采用されているアレンジとは装いをかなり异にしていた。この「In other words」という台词は歌词の中にも登场しており、现在でもこの曲をカバーする际に『Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words) 』というタイトルとしているアーティストもいる。同年にはヴォーカルのケイ・バラード (Kaye Ballard) によりデッカ・レコードにて初めて録音されている。
1956年にはポーシャ・ネルソンのアルバム『Let Me Love You』に収録された。同じ年に、ジョニー・マティスがこの曲を収録する际に初めて『Fly Me to the Moon』の题が登场した。
现在多く耳にする『Fly Me to the Moon』が完成するのは1962年の事である。作曲家・编曲家のジョー・ハーネル (Joe Harnell) が4拍子のボサノヴァ风に书き直した曲が、现在よく知られているアレンジの一つである。その後フランク・シナトラがカバーして爆発的なヒットになった。ヴォーカルナンバー以外でもインストナンバーとしても知られ、オスカー・ピーターソン等のジャズ・アーティストが演奏している。
シナトラがこの曲を発表した1960年代、アメリカ合众国はアポロ计画の真っ只中にあって、本当に「月に连れて行って」贳えるのは非常に近くまで迫っている未来の出来事であった。そのため『Fly Me to the Moon』は一种の时代のテーマソングのように扱われ、これがこの曲のヒットにつながった。シナトラのバージョンの録音テープは、アポロ10号、11号にも积み込まれ、人类が月に持ち込んだ最初の曲になった。
