“A Red, Red Rose”is one of his famous songs that Robert Burns wrote in the “ballad meter”. In this song, he expressed his deep love towards his lover Jean Armour.

Beginning with a quatrain containing two similes, the poet shows the beauty of his lover with happy, proud tone. He compares his lover to a red rose that newly spring in June and thinks she has graceful voice which is like a wonderful blend of sweet music. Here, “a red, red rose”, a lively imagery, signifies his lover’s full of youthful energy and vitality. “Sweet melody”further emphasizes the harmony, perfect of her body and even her character.

The second and third stanza, with a cracking pace, express the poet’s blazing love. “Till the seas gang dry and the rocks melt the sun”. Used to liken faithful love, this sentence is too wonderful for words. It’s easy to find that poetic imagery has immediately changed, no longer a red rose or a moving piece, but a newer, wider and deeper mood. It has become extensive ocean, solid rock and scorching sun.
第二节和第三节，用急促的节奏，表达了诗人炽热的爱。“直到海水干涸，岩石融化太阳”。用来比喻忠贞的爱情，这句话太精彩了。不难发现，诗意的意象立刻发生了变化，不再是一朵红玫瑰或一幅动人的作品，而是一种更新、宽广、深沉的意境。它变成了广阔的海洋，坚固的岩石和烈日。
Although some words are repeated, it doesn’t look lengthy at all, but looks more sincere, showing deep love. In addition, the poet use the rhetorical device of incremental repetition to emphasis and musicality and it also help to subtend the poet’s unforgettable love.
虽然有些话是重复的，但看起来一点也不冗长，反而显得更加真诚，流露出深深的爱。此外，诗人还运用了渐进式重复的修辞手法来强调和音乐性，也有助于掩饰诗人难忘的爱情。
The final stanza shows his farewell to his lover again and a promise of return. “I will come again though it was ten thousand mile”. Exaggerated words convey the poet’s infinitely affectionate feelings.
最后一节是他再次向爱人告别，并许下了回报的诺言。“虽然有一万里，我还是会再来的”。夸张的文字表达了诗人无限深情的情感。
Regardless of imagery, structure, or words, they all appear to be natural and elegant. The folk verse also doubles its sense of music. Profuse love runs through the whole poem. The entire universe can change and be destroyed, but only love can last forever.

Till a' the seas gang dry.
My graceful girl, you are very beautiful and I love you very much; my dear, I will love you firmly until all the seas go dry. The speaker expresses his fiery passion for his love and swears to love her forever.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;

While the sands o' life shall run.
My dear, I will love you till all the seas go dry and the rocks melt with the sun. I will love you firmly so long there is a life keeping time or I will love you until the end of my life.

Tho' 'twere ten thousand miles.
Farewell to you, my only dear love, farewell to you only for a short time! I will come back back again even though it were ten thousand mile away, my dear!
A Red, Red Rose
O, My love is like a red, red rose which has newly sprung in June; O, my love is like the melody(music) which has sweetly played harmoniously.
My love is deep as you are beautiful, my pretty girl. I will love you until the sea dry, my dear.
Until the sea dry and the rock melt with the sun. O, I love you till the end of my life, my dear.

Theme: to express strong affection to his love, swearing that he will love her for ever.
Structure:
1.Stanza 1: compare his sweet heart as a red rose and sweet music.
2. Stanza 2-3 : swear that he will love her for ever, and assure that he will never change his heart.
3. Stanza 4: assure his lover that he will leave
for a short time but will come back no matter how far it is.
Form: Scottish Folklore, short lines, strong rhythm. The first and third lines have 8 syllables and the second and fourth lines have 6 syllable in the first two stanzas and 7 syllables in the second two stanzas. Rhyming abab.
Use simile to express the strong affection which can not be controlled. And use repetition to intensify his emotion.

从格律来说，比较工整。全诗分四节，每节又有四行，大都采用抑扬格，即“弱强弱强弱强弱强”的节奏，非常适合朗读和吟诵。
从诗意来说，热烈而理智，奔放而又深沉，让人久读不厌。由明喻开篇，第一节将爱人比成六月玫瑰和琴上乐曲；再转暗喻，第二节指自己对她的爱延续至海枯石烂；第三节心态复杂，暗指时间的流逝，爱也会有变化，让人回想起第一节中“六月玫瑰”，终有凋零之时；第四节更将复杂心态推向高潮，既需短暂分手，又承诺必将归来。
从用词来说，多用古语，更增添了诗的严谨和华美。比如：thou=you(主格,“你”，相当于中文古字“君”或“卿”）,thee=you（宾格，“你”，亦相当于中文古字“君”或“卿”），fare thee well=farewell to you=say good-bye to you（“再见”）
亦用方言，较显亲切。如：luve=love（“爱人”，“爱”）, melodie=melody（“乐曲”）, gane=gone（“逝去”）, ware=were（are过去式，“是”）
赏析二
这首诗的特点之一是其音乐性。它保持着民谣自然、流畅、可咏可诵的特点。主要通过错落有致的的抑扬格，富于生命力的英文词和散发泥土芳香的苏格兰方言 。之二为真挚感情的表达。第一节中，诗人运用了两个比喻，把爱人比作玫瑰和乐曲。“红红的”和“在六月里初开”这样的从句使得爱人的形象显得格外美丽、清纯而且富有青春活力。三四句把爱人比作优雅的乐曲，这就给读者以想象的空间，使读者产生联想，从美妙中看到了爱人优美舞动的身姿。从表面看，“海枯石烂”是一个陈旧的比喻，但是，由于诗人在整篇诗作中运用了质朴的语言，并把爱情放置在人类生存这样大的背景下，使得爱情得以升华，愈发显得真挚，实在。这样清新的诗篇、这样真挚感情的自然流露，在英国新古典主义时期的诗歌中极为少见。彭斯诗歌的出现标志着浪漫主义诗歌的开始。

诗的开头用了一个鲜活的比喻——红红的玫瑰．一下子就将恋人的美丽写得活灵活现，同时也写出了诗人心中的感情。在诗人的心中，恋人不仅有醉人的外表．而且有着柔美灵动的心灵，像一段乐曲，婉转动人地倾诉着美丽的心灵。
诗人对恋人的爱是那样的真切、深情和热烈。那是种怎样的爱呀!——要一直爱到海桔石烂。这样的爱情专注使人想到中国的古老民歌：”上邪l我欲与君相知．长命无绝衰。山无陵．江水为竭．冬雷阵阵．夏雨雪，天地合．乃敢与君绝。”诗人的哀婉和柔情又可用《诗经》里的一句来说明：“执子之手，与子偕老。”何等的坚决和悠长!
爱的火焰在诗人的心中强烈地燃烧着，诗人渴望有着美好的结果。但是，此时的诗人已经是囊中羞涩．诗人知道这时的自己并不能给恋人带来幸福，他已经预感到自己要离去。但诤人坚信：这样的离别只是暂别，自己一定会回来的。
这首诗是诗人的代表作．它开了英国浪漫主义诗歌的先河．对济慈、拜伦等人有很大的影响。诗人用流畅悦耳的音调、质朴无华的词语和热烈真挚的情感打动了千百万恋人的心．也使得这首诗在问世之后成为人们传唱不衰的经典。诗歌吸收了民歌的特点，采用口语使诗歌朗朗上口，极大地显示了民歌的特色和魅力。读来让人感到诗中似乎有一种原始的冲动，一种原始的生命之流在流淌。另外，诗中使用了重复的句子，大大增强了诗歌的感情力度。在这首仅仅有16句的诗中。涉及“爱”的词语竟有十几处之多，然而并不使人感到重复和累赘。反而更加强化了诗人对恋人爱情的强烈和情感的浓郁程度。
